Q.
Nowadays, the development of technology has allowed computers and mobiles to translate language automatically. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
It is undeniable that there is a constant trend towards technological advancement which has enabled computers and mobile phones to automatically translate language. While this admittedly does introduce bugs, I would argue that they are outshined by a number of definite advantages, including fast translation and variety of languages.
On the one hand, electronic translators may face some negative consequences. The main one is that machine translation is likely to have low accuracy. This is because there are thousands of words that carry different meanings depending on their counterparts, which is commonly cited as a major hurdle for robot translators as they cannot fully understand the context compared to their human counterparts. Coupled with this is a grammar that includes sentence patterns as well as different sets of rules, meaning that this linguistic feature can even complicate the problem. For example, a simple sentence in English consists of a subject and a verb and is often combined with an object, but not all languages have the same structure.
However, I am convinced that the idea of automatic language translation using modern tools can provide several definite advantages in terms of speed and variety of languages. Regarding the former, an artificial translation machine is capable of conveying language capabilities within minutes or even seconds, meaning that it is seen as a functional tool for many time-constrained conversations and briefs. Moreover, when it comes to the latter, despite minor grammatical errors, these user-friendly high-tech programs deny users the flexibility of using multiple languages whenever they go. A prime example is Google Translator, as it can continuously recognize and translate up to a hundred languages and is therefore used almost all over the world.
In conclusion, although machine translation software may produce less accurate texts, the faster translation and flexibility of the wide range of language capabilities it can offer is inevitably convenient. Thus, I believe that this development is much more beneficial overall.
