Q. Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones in  communication has negative effects on young people's reading and  writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The increasing use of digital devices in communications affects people's ability to read and write. Some people are concerned about some negative consequences, regardless of the potential benefits they may receive from this trend. I partly agree with this because their literacy is downplayed, although computers and mobile phones sometimes facilitate their communication through frequent online messaging.

On the one hand, the proliferation of electronic gadgets can have a detrimental effect on people's ability to read and write, as they are less likely to grasp the important idea of a story or dissertation. In other words, lack of vocabulary and comprehension skills makes it difficult to connect one idea to another because they do not know what messages the authors intend to convey. For example, this was made evident by evidence that students' average language scores dropped sharply from 5 in 2020 to 3 in 2024. As more and more young people are used to reading only short sentences about everyday life, including school, friends and holidays. in the message box, they tend to indicate some frustration when it comes to reading long academic articles on history and science. This harms their critical thinking as they are reluctant to spend time thinking about abstract ideas and logic using a lot of jargon.

On the other hand, increasing dependence on modern tools does not necessarily lead to a decline in reading and writing skills, as people communicate more actively online. Indeed, as smartphones have become an important communication tool, many young people interact with each other, often exchanging written messages and personal photos on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram to build close relationships. In addition, they are often expected to respond more immediately to the random comments constantly posted by friends and family, which encourages them to recognize others' intentions and express their feelings in words within a limited time. Thus, they can express themselves better through the constant habit of using electronic gadgets to communicate with other people.

In conclusion, I agree to some extent that young people's reading and writing could be potentially detrimental due to their increasing dependence on digital devices as they are less patient in reading complex books. However, sometimes they develop their communication skills due to the growing need to understand various information, as well as respond more quickly to a rapidly changing world.
