Some people say that governments should pay for public health care and education, while others say that it is not the government’s responsibility. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
It is generally believed that public services such as health and education are paid for by the state, although there are opposing views that citizens should also bear part of the costs. In my opinion, residents should take primary responsibility for health and education services.
On the one hand, those who advocate state provision of health care and education have their own arguments. Since the government raises funding primarily through taxpayer revenue, these benefits must be provided in return to its citizens. By covering these costs, authorities could also ensure that every resident is provided with basic rights, thereby helping to reduce inequalities between areas. What this argument misses, however, is that most countries only tax people who earn a salary; therefore, excessive use of government incentives will actually place a heavy burden on these residents.
On the other hand, I firmly believe that the costs of health and education should be covered by the citizens themselves. One of the main explanations is that too much government support can lead to greater population dependency and inappropriate use of these services. If residents were required to pay their share of the cost, they would become more responsible. For example, paying for medical services will make people aware of their health status and begin to lead a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, when citizens bear their own costs, it will take some of the financial burden off governments and they will have more budgets to spend on other areas that need them more.
To conclude, although it is argued that the government should provide funds for health and education, I believe that these expenditures should be the responsibility of the citizens themselves.
