Q. Some college freshmen find that the courses they choose are not suitable for them. What are the causes of this? What can be done to solve the problem?

Choosing modules is one of the most important decisions a college freshman can make, as it will have a long-term impact on their personal and professional life. However, some of them face a dilemma in the decision making process. In this essay, we will analyze the cause and suggest some possible solutions to the problem.

Many students hesitate or make poor choices when choosing what they really want to study simply because their decisions are based on emotions or a very limited set of criteria. They may follow their friends or persuade their parents to take certain courses without understanding their true needs; they can focus on less important aspects such as degree of difficulty of study, personal development, etc. For example, a large number of students consider employability as the only criterion when choosing modules. With the current financial crisis caused by the economic downturn, it is logical to take into account job prospects, but those choosing should also weigh the pros and cons when making their final decisions, taking into account the larger number of factors involved.

To participate in the relevant modules, first-year students need to equip themselves with self-awareness in selection, which entails recognizing their interests, personality traits, abilities and desires on their own. The more overlap between these aspects, the more satisfying there is in future research. As a result, they should consider that labor market demands are always changing over time, meaning that it is definitely not the only factor influencing decision making. It is the ability to adapt to interests and growth that allows someone to stand out in their career. For this reason, the key to making wise choices must depend on the ability to encourage students to remain curious, value diversity of opinion, think critically, and communicate effectively. This way, students will not only enjoy learning these lessons, but will also be able to find the right path in their future career if they make the right choices.

In conclusion, freshmen who are well-informed and self-aware are more likely to be satisfied with their choices.
