Q. The charts below show the proportion of people's total spending in a particular European country was spent on different commodities and services in 1957 and in 2008.

The given pie charts illustrate a comparison of the total expenditures that residents of a European country spent on various goods and services in two different years: 1958 and 2008.

In 1958, the proportion of citizens' budget for food was the highest at 32%. The figures for the remaining categories, with the exception of luxury goods, which accounted for only 7%, were lower and ranged from 8% to 22%.

From 1958 to 2008, the percentage of food expenditures fell to just 12%. The last year also saw a noticeable decline in spending on clothing and entertainment, down 16% and 6% respectively. In contrast, tourism/transport and luxury goods showed significant growth to the same figure of 17% in 2008, while the country saw a rapid increase in housing to 32%.

Overall, it is clear that while spending on housing, travel/transport, and luxury goods showed an upward trend, the opposite pattern could be observed in the figures for other categories.
