Q. The table below gives information about the population of Australia and Malaysia in 1980 and 2002.

The table compares six Australian and Malaysian demographics for the years 1980 and 2002.

After 22 years, the total population in both countries has grown significantly, with Malaysia almost doubling its previous figure to 24.3 million. While the percentage of males and females in Australia remained stable during this period, the Malaysian male population increased by 0.3%.

In 2002, the two countries saw a downward trend in fertility, with the 1.0% difference being larger in Malaysia. Their older populations, by contrast, experienced the opposite pattern. Between 1980 and 2002, an additional 2.8% of older people lived in Australia, while in Malaysia the increase was much less significant, at 0.6%. The average population growth rate increased by 0.1% in Australia, but decreased by 0.3% in Malaysia.

Overall, while the population of both countries increased significantly during this period, Malaysia's population grew at a much higher rate. Despite comparable male and female populations, the two countries showed marked differences in fertility rates, average annual population growth, and population aging.
