Q. Nowadays, more and more people decide to have children later in their life. What do you think are the reasons for this? Do the advantages of the trend outweigh the disadvantages?

These days, the vast majority of people have children at an advanced age/late in their lives. This essay discusses the various reasons behind this mentality and why this practice has more drawbacks than benefits.

To commence with, people are having children at later stages of life because of their personal and professional pursuits. Firstly, young people are focused on their career and are interested in attaining higher position and status in their life before taking up their family responsibilities. Secondly, most young adults believe that their 20s and early 30s should be spent on various pleasure activities such as traveling and that having children at a young age prevents them from doing it. Furthermore, financial problems are also believed to be one of the factors encouraging people to delay parenthood. Thus, these are the reasons why people choose not to have children at an early age. However, having children at a late age is detrimental to both individuals and society.

Studies have shown that women who conceive after a certain age are at a higher risk of miscarriage. In addition, countries with low birth rates lack a young workforce. To illustrate, countries like Japan are facing a severe youth shortage as most people marry late and many of them fail to conceive. In addition, women who conceive in their late 30s or 40s are more likely to have children with genetic defects such as Down syndrome. Another downside is the greater age difference between parents and children.

To conclude, people have children at an advanced age because they want to focus on their careers and achieve financial stability. I believe that this development is largely detrimental to individuals and society.
