Matching information - This type of question asks you to match statements to paragraphs in your reading text. Statements can be reasons, descriptions, summaries, definitions, facts, or explanations. You need to find specific information in a paragraph and match it to one of the statements. The answer is usually contained in a whole phrase or sentence, rather than a single word. The following is a sample question for matching IELTS Academic Reading Test information.
Identity Information ( YES / NO / NOT GIVEN) (TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN) - In this type of question, you will be given statements related to the reading passage, and your task will be to answer whether the statement is true, false, or not given. This type of question is one of the most difficult question types in an IELTS reading test because you need strong logic to answer correctly. It is essential that the examinees understand the difference between FALSE and NOT GIVEN.
TRUE (YES) if the statement is consistent with the information
FALSE (NO) if the statement conflicts with the information
NOT GIVEN if there is no information given in the passage
Multiple Choice
- In IELTS Academic Reading Test and IELTS General Reading Test, you
will have to answer multiple-choice questions. Each multiple choice
question will be different depending on how many answer choices you have
to choose and the type of question you are asked.
Summary, Flowchart Completion - In this type of question, you are given a summary of the IELTS lesson and you need to fill it out using the information in the text. Summary IELTS reading will be from only part of the passage, so it will not summarize the entire reading passage. There are two options for this type of question. You may be asked to select words from the text or select from a list of answers.
Revealing the views/statements of the writer
- In this type of question, you will be given a series of statements
and asked the question: Do the following statements align with the views
/ statements of the author? You must write YES, NO, or NOT GIVEN in the
squares on their answer sheet.
NO means that the views or statements of the author are clearly not consistent with the statement.
NOT GIVEN means that the point of view or claim is not confirmed or refuted.
Label The Diagram
- This type of question requires you to fill in the labels on the
diagram that refers to the description contained in the IELTS text. You
can get three kinds of diagrams: a technical drawing of a machine or
invention, something from the natural world, or a design or plan.
