Q.
Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some argue that the principal purpose of advertising is to increase sales of products that people do not need. This essay completely contradicts this idea, since the main purpose of advertising should be to inform the target audience about the range of services, and an attempt to lure people into buying unnecessary goods is doomed to failure.
To commence with, getting information about the product you need is the main driving force behind meaningful shopping. Therefore, advertising companies should define their target audience and provide them with information about the different types of goods and services they need, rather than trying to attract them randomly. For instance, a language learning app called Cambly advertised its services for language learners on YouTube and twofolds its revenue in a month.
Moreover, it's an undeniable fact that customers are becoming more and more conscious and as a result, it can be difficult to persuade them to buy things they don't need. Since buyers usually have a limited budget, they tend to be more careful when it comes to shopping. That is why firms that use a strategy of non-targeted sales are doomed to loss of income. For example, a well-known business called BlueX lost 38% of its revenue by ignoring preference surveys.
