Q. Many young people change their jobs and careers. What are the reason for this? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Experts in developing and developed countries argue about whether periodically changing jobs from one company to another is beneficial. This essay discusses both points of view and argues that the accompanying disadvantages are more obvious than the advantages.

To commence with, there are a number of benefits to getting a new job. These are two major reasons: firstly, people tend to get a new job with a higher salary. In fact, by examining job descriptions in the local labor market, we can see that the same job title can be paid across a wide range of salaries in different companies, which makes employees want and need to turn to a new employer.  Furthermore, it also increases the likelihood of promotions due to the experience gained in previous companies. Secondly, compared to those who have worked in the same company for decades, workers can broaden their personal horizons by facing new challenges from a new environment that will enrich their personal growth. Thus, it is quite clear that regular job changes can benefit oneself.

Although there are reasons for looking for a new job that is conducive to personal development, the resulting disadvantages cannot be ignored. The most significant drawback is the potential loss of non-wage benefits such as pensions and health insurance. For example, compared to experienced staff, new staff hired for several months, despite their higher position, may not accumulate sufficient achievement and trust among teammates in a short period. Meanwhile, after working for the company for decades, a long-term teammate often showed loyalty to his employer, resulting in great benefits. This may induce the company to offer its long-term partners more benefits than a new headcount. In addition, new staff require dedicated retraining resources to adapt to the new environment, and this additional investment offered by the company can also deter their manager from promoting new hires in the coming years.

In conclusion, there are both benefits and costs when there are frequent job changes, however, with growing concerns about job stability, the negative points outweighs the positive. It is predicted that the phenomenon of job changes will decrease in the foreseeable future.
