IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions & Answers

IELTS Speaking Test Part 1 usually takes 4-5 minutes. Its essence is a simple interview to obtain basic information of the test taker, for example, at home, city, study or hobby. The candidate must provide personal information in a small talk interview. The conversation is supervised by examiners who actually need to follow the script.

In IELTS Speaking Part 1, the exam will begin by introducing the examiner first and then asking you about your identity. He/she will then ask you general/simple questions regarding your background, home, work, school, family, interests, hobbies, and so on. You will then need to talk continuously on the given topic for about 4-5 minutes, after which you will be asked a few personal questions. Then you will have to answer these questions very casually and honestly.

Initial questions in the IELTS Speaking Test Part 1:-
- What is your full name?
- May I see your ID?
- Simple problems related to yourself, for example, hometown, family.
- If you are employed - what is your job, why did you choose it, questions about colleagues
- If you are student - what subjects, why did you choose them, do you like them and why

During the IELTS Speaking Part 1, test-takers will also be asked questions on two or three topics, such as family, travel, food preferences, and the national festival.

Part 1 always starts with some background information, so this is the most natural part of an IELTS speaking test. This part is very important for candidates who are aiming for a 4-5 grade. Meanwhile, high scorers should use it to impress examiners so they can challenge the tough questions in Part 2/3.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 will contain all personal questions and/or questions related to you, you should try to answer each question honestly and confidently. In any case, if you do not understand the question posed to you, you can always ask the examiner to explain it, since he will only test your language skills, not knowledge of the topic.
