IELTS Writing Task 1 Vocabulary

Academic IELTS Task 1, are evaluated on four criteria. We covered the first two, Achieving the Task and Cohesion and Consistency, on the overview page of IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, and now it's time to focus on vocabulary.

Understanding the evaluation criteria

Before we start learning the specific vocabulary you will need for the IELTS Task 1 essay, it is important that you understand how vocabulary is assessed. A dictionary, also called a lexical resource, contains 25% of the grades, so you need to know what the examiner is looking for.

We are going to focus on the 6-8 ranges as these are the levels most students aspire to. Here are the official vocabulary assessment criteria. Don't worry guys if you are not able to understand them. Below I will explain the main points. If you follow my directions in this lesson, you will be able to meet these criteria and get a good 1 IELTS score.

Vocabulary (lexical resource) is the ability to use a range of suitable vocabulary and use it correctly. Of course, that's not all, and there are three key things you need to do to get a high score in vocabulary. Correct spelling is obviously necessary, so I won't talk about it anymore.

Use Vocabulary Appropriately

In your task 1 (Bar, Line, Pie, Process, Table Chart), you will describe data, and this will require some very specific vocabulary that you could only use in this part of the exam. This is what the assessment criteria refer to when they mention "exact meanings" and "less common lexical items / vocabulary."

Use Flexible Vocabulary Words

You need to have a wide enough vocabulary so that you can say the same thing in several ways, that is, paraphrase. This is what the evaluation criteria mean by "allow for some flexibility and precision." You do this with synonyms.

Use Collocations Appropriately

The evaluation criteria specifically mentions the correct use of phrases as what you will be evaluating. A phrase is a combination of two or more words that, when used together, sound correct to a native speaker. A word combination often does not work if you are trying to replace the first word with a synonym.
