What is Phrasal Verbs?
In traditional English grammar, Phrasal Verbs are a combination of two or three words from different grammatical categories - a verb and a particle, such as an adverb or preposition - to form a single semantic unit at the lexical or syntactic level. For example,"I cannot put up with you anymore".
You may know that the word “put” means “put something somewhere,” for example, “I put the book on the table,” and the word “up” means “take a higher position or get closer to it”.
However, when these words are combined, the meaning changes completely.
Phrasal verbs are important to IELTS as someone who knows how to use them naturally demonstrates that they are fluent in English. In some cases, they can be used both in writing and speaking.
You also need to be able to recognize them if someone else uses them in writing or speaking, otherwise, you may misunderstand what they are saying.
If you learn some phrases and try to 'fit' them into your speaking or writing to get a high score without knowing them properly, it may sound unnatural and you may make mistakes, which will be noticed by the interviewer.

Most conversations in the IELTS listening section are between two or more people discussing a topic. These conversations are usually neutral with respect to informal conversations, so you can hear quite a lot of phrasal verbs.
You can use formal-neutral phrasal verbs in IELTS Writing, and probably in IELTS Speaking module.
Several rules for the correct use of Phrasal Verbs
If you choose to use phrasal verbs in English speaking or writing, make sure you use them correctly.
Phrasal verbs can be different or integral, depending on whether you can use other words between the verb and the particle. With split phrasal verbs, you can use other words between the verb and the particle, while with non-split phrasal verbs, you cannot insert other words between them.
The following list contains phrasal verbs that can be used as neutral or formal words, so you can confidently use them in an academic context such as on the IELTS exam.
- Argue out
Meaning - Argue about a problem to find a solution.
Example - If we cannot ARGUE our differences, OUT, we'll have to take them to court.
- Bundle off
Meaning - Send someone somewhere
Example - He BUNDLED the kids OFF to bed.
- Calm down
Meaning - Stop being angry or emotionally excited.
Example - When I lose my temper, it takes ages for me to CALM DOWN again.
- Dawn on
Meaning - Finally realize or understand something
Example - The truth only DAWNED ON me much later.
- Embark upon
Meaning - Start a project or venture
Example - Fernanda has just EMBARKED UPON a new professional challenge.
- Face off
Meaning - Confront
Example - The company FACED OFF the competition.
- Get it together
Meaning - Being a relationship
Example - They only GET IT TOGETHER at the very end of the film.
